Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with team member Mike Garrison, who is celebrating his 3-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage.
You can meet Mike at Lockaway Storage on I-35’s frontage road in Schertz, TX.
Colby: Let’s start with the basics. How many years have you been with the company?
Mike: This is my third year.
Colby: Year three. Now, have you always had the same position or have you done much moving around?
Mike: When I started, I worked at three locations as assistant manager. But at some point, I was basically the roamer, so if people had vacation or medical issues I could always fill in. I worked a lot all over the place.
Colby: So, was self storage what you were expecting when you went into it or has it been kind of different than what you thought?
Mike: I guess I didn’t really know what to expect. I had some experience as a tenant of storage. I was in a band and had a storage unit that we would practice in. It is different than I expected, but I had a good general idea when I started.
“Mike is a great guy. I love to call his store because he has such an awesome greeting – it is warm and inviting and makes you feel good! Mike is a problem solver. Anytime he calls with a problem, he normally offers up a solution to go along with it. He takes initiative on his property and is a very quick learner. He is great with customers and team members alike and I very much enjoyed being his DM when I supervised the Schertz location. He was truly missed while out and I am so glad he is back!”

Colby: What advice would you give somebody if they were applying for a job with Lockaway and didn’t have any experience? What would you tell them?
Mike: Having a good attitude is always important and to try to enjoy your time here, and never underestimate the importance of good walking shoes.
Colby: I like that. Good walking shoes and a good attitude.
Mike: Yeah, and especially at this company, which really is a great company to work for, just try to be happy and have a positive outlook, that goes far. I told my friend he should apply here. I said, “Hey, the company and the pay is awesome, Don is awesome. What else do you need?”
Colby: Well hey, I hope it works out for him. Now, let’s just talk a little about you outside of self storage. What kind of hobbies do you have and what keeps you busy when you aren’t at work? Are you still in a band?
Mike: No. I don’t really do that anymore. I mean I still play guitar sometimes and I do some music production, but that is more recording other people’s music. I don’t focus on that too much more. I just got a German Shepard puppy, so that’s kind of my hobby. Training him and bringing him up.
Colby: Yeah puppies take up some time at least for that first little bit. Those are good dogs though once you get them trained.
Mike: Yeah, I can’t wait until he learns the command to go bite somebody, that’s the real reason I got him.
Colby: HAHA, a security dog huh?
Mike: Yeah, exactly. He’s a really good dog too. Joking aside, he is a nice little puppy and he’s learning a little every day. He’s getting it.
“Mike Garrison is reliable and someone who is a very special person in this company. He has a great sense of humor and is always willing to be open to coaching. His objective is always to better his store and is my go-to for great tech or building a PC advice.”

Colby: Tell me a little bit about the local area around the location you are at right now. Are there any good local restaurants that you might recommend that stand out in your mind?
Mike: Listen, anywhere in Texas if you can find a Whataburger. That is the best food that you are going to find.
Colby: I still haven’t had Whataburger.
Mike: It’s the best. I’ve gone to them on the west coast, east coast, it doesn’t matter, it has never been bad.
Colby: Is there any particular attractions, events, or places to go out there?
Mike: There is the river route in New Braunfels. It’s just a little up the road from me and that’s a fun thing to go do. There’s always just going to a local bar to grab a drink with some friends.
Colby: Is there anybody that you would like to give a shout out to that has been helpful in your three years there?
Mike: Well I have really learned a lot from the DMs that I have had. I had Ashley, Amy, and now Henry. They have all been great and I appreciate all they have ever helped me with and guided me. I should also point out my friend, Lyle, who encouraged me to apply to the job in the first place.
