Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with San Antonio team member Mason Anderson, who is celebrating his 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week.
Peter: Congratulations on 1-year with Lockaway! A year is a long time now a days at any company.
Mason: Yeah, I agree.
Peter: How did you get involved with Lockaway Storage?
Mason: I just left my last job and I was trying to get me and my now wife’s business off the ground. I was working on that and I needed to make a little more money, so I started looking for jobs and I saw the job posting. It seemed interesting, so I thought I would give it a shot.
Peter: Right on. After a year, you probably have a few stories when people ask you what it’s like to work in self storage. What’s your go to story?
Mason: When everybody asks me, I tell them about the time I met Mike Gale from the San Antonio Spurs. That’s the one I always remember.
Peter: Did you get to talk basketball with him?
Mason: Yeah, we got to talk basketball and he even signed some basketball cards for us too.
Peter: That’s so cool. Do you feel like you have learned anything special from being a self storage property manager?
Mason: Before this, I actually worked at an apartment complex as a leasing agent, so I have worked in property management in a different kind of way. Working here, I have learned to talk to people in a different way, becase we’re dealing with their belongings, not their home. I really try to listen to what they need and just try to help them in any way I can.
Peter: I think you hit the nail on the head. When you’re dealing with people’s stuff, there’s a higher level of intimacy, a higher degree of importance.
Mason: Right, they just want to make sure their stuff is being taken care of. I tell them about all of the cameras we have. For the most part, everyone loves it here.
Peter: That’s awesome. Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
Mason: I like playing golf. I played golf in high school. I actually coached a little bit at the elementary level. My wife and I like to go antique shopping.
Peter: Oh, really? What kind of antiques do you like to go shopping for?
Mason: Furniture, advertising, I don’t know if you have seen that show called American Pickers or not.
Peter: Oh, yeah! I have.
Mason: Yeah, we kind of like the same stuff like they like. We haven’t bought any old cars, but I like antique cars and advertising. Just different stuff.
Peter: Do you and your wife live in the San Antonio area?
Mason: Yes, we are actually closing on a house next Wednesday.
Peter: Congratulations! That is huge!
Mason: Thank you, thank you.
Peter: Do you live near the facility or do you have to commute?
Mason: Right now, we are living about halfway between both of the locations I work at. The house that we’re closing on is closer to Rittiman, because I am here more often.
Peter: Do you have any restaurants in the area that you like to frequent?
Mason: Our restaurant that we like to go to is a Mexican restaurant called Jacala. It’s off of West Ave. My wife’s family has been going there for years and she introduced me to it.
Peter: Is it family owned?
Mason: Yeah, it’s family owned. It’s pretty popular. They have all the pictures on the wall of small town celebrities who go in there and get their meals. It’s authentic Mexican food. It’s not like a chain Mexican restaurant. It’s really good.
Peter: Well, Mason, those were all of my questions. At the end of these, I always like to ask if there is anyone at Lockaway who has helped you out during your year working here? Anyone who deserves a shout out?
Mason: I’d say my two managers, Lyle and Geno. They’ve taught me a lot and we work really well together. I believe they like me too, haha. I’ve grown a lot working here and they have taught me so much.
